USET OERM Webinar: Disinfection Byproducts & MDBP Rules Revision Update
April 24, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am CDT
Disinfection Byproducts & MDBP Rules Revision Update
presented by the USET Office of Environmental Resource Management
Disinfection is a required step in drinking water treatment that is enforced to protect public health. However, when selecting the appropriate disinfectant for a specific system, it is essential to note that disinfectants react with organics and inorganics in the source water to form disinfection byproducts or DBPs. The challenge that must be addressed in the water treatment process is providing adequate protection from microbial pathogens through disinfection while simultaneously minimizing the health risks associated with DBP formation.
This presentation will also provide an overview of the regulatory process, topics under consideration, and the timeline with the next steps regarding the potential regulatory revisions of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs) included in five MDBP rules following the third Six-Year Review.
