For Our People, Stories of Tribal Self-Governance & Sovereignty: Episode 1
May 5, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm CDT
For Our People is a new series dedicated to sharing stories that demonstrate Tribal Nations’ success and innovation administering governmental programs and taking actions that improve the health and wellbeing of their citizens, culture, and communities.
In Episode 1, teamwork is on full display at the Lakota Nation Invitational. The Oglala Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne River Sioux, and Rosebud Sioux demonstrate that teamwork is also important off the court as the three Tribal Nations join together to improve healthcare services for their relatives living in Rapid City, South Dakota.
The Karuk Tribe recovers from the devastating 2020 Slater Fire and seeks to use traditional ecological land management practices to prevent future mega-fires, increase food security, and secure cultural activities.
Sicangu Lakota recording and performing artist Gunner Jules opens up about his start in the music industry and shares a new song.
For Our People is produced by the Self-Governance Communication & Education Tribal Consortium (SGCETC), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, in partnership with FireThief Productions. Special thanks to Cherokee Nation Film Office, Jennifer Loren, Tatanka Means, the Great Plains Tribal Leaders Health Board, the Karuk Tribe, Kathy McCovey, Gunner Jules, Spur Pourier, and Ekichetu for contributions to the series.
