The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Division of Tribal Affairs, in collaboration with the CMS Division of Enrollment Policy & Operations, is holding this All Tribes Consultation to share an overview of the guidance CMS has released that outlines the requirements and expectations for states to restore eligibility and enrollment operations for Medicaid beneficiaries, as outlined in the March 2022 State Health Official (SHO) Letter #22-001 (PDF, 816 KB, 46 pp). We will also discuss strategies to engage tribal stakeholders and ensure eligible individuals remain enrolled in coverage.

Background

State Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) eligibility and enrollment activities have been disrupted due to the effects of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE). Medicaid and CHIP agencies will have a large volume of eligibility and enrollment actions, including renewals of coverage for beneficiaries, that must be initiated when the PHE eventually ends, and CMS is working to ensure states restore routine operations in a manner that promotes continuity of coverage for eligible individuals and facilitates seamless coverage transitions.
