The Tribal Forest Protection Act (TFPA) allows federally recognized Tribal Nations to propose projects to be conducted on Forest Service land to reduce threats to adjacent Tribal lands, trust resources, and values. Tribal values can be ecological, cultural or archaeological.  There are over 12 million acres of US Forest Service lands in the USET region offering a significant opportunity for application of the Tribal Forest Protection act.

Just west of the USET footprint in the lake states, Forest Service Region 9, there was an excellent ArcGIS storymap created highlighting Tribal Forest Protection Act projects that have occurred since the act’s inception. Some of the projects are just getting underway, including several that were planned at climate adaptation workshops in partnership with the USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub.
