Call for Inputs: Report on “The right of Indigenous Peoples to their traditional economies”

January 31

During its 17th session in 2024, the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) confirmed its decision to prepare a report on “The Right of Indigenous Peoples to Their Traditional Economies.” This report will be presented at the 60th session of the Human Rights Council in September 2025.

The purpose of the report is to identify, disseminate, and promote good practices and lessons learned in efforts to advance the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, particularly regarding the recognition and strengthening of Indigenous Peoples’ traditional economies. The report will also explore strategies for enhancing Indigenous Peoples’ capacity to participate in decision-making processes related to the management of their traditional economies, with a focus on sustainable development and the protection of their rights to freely engage in economic activities.

EMRIP seeks input from Indigenous Peoples, States, civil society organizations, national human rights institutions, and others on key topics, including legal frameworks, governance structures, food sovereignty, and traditional economic practices. Contributions will help shape actionable recommendations to promote and protect Indigenous Peoples’ economic rights and strengthen their participation in decision-making.
