Native Journey: A Conversation with Barry Dana

Native activist Barry Dana will discuss his connection to the earth, his work for Native sovereignty, and the relationship between the Wabanaki people and the state of Maine during a conversation April 28 at Prince Memorial Library.
Barry Dana grew up on Indian Island in the Penobscot River, and currently lives in Solon. He served as Chief of the Penobscot Nation from 2000–2004, and is a teacher and artist. In his youth, he spent a lot of time with tribal elders, from whom he learned about Native traditions such as hunting, gathering plants, canoeing, and snowshoe- and basket-making. He is credited with re-invigorating the Katahdin 100, a Native spiritual journey from Indian Island to Katahdin by foot and canoe. He completed the1996 250-mile Can Am Crown Sled Dog Race on cross-country skis, and in 2017 hiked from Mt. Washington to Katahdin in honor of his late uncle.
