There are several ways for producers to participate in NAIS.
· Premises Registration - Identification of the geographic location where animals are raised, housed, or boarded through a Premises Identification Number (PIN).
· Animal Identification - Individual or group identification that remains with the animal for its lifetime.
· Animal Tracing - Access to timely, accurate animal movement records to quickly locate at-risk animals in the event of a disease outbreak.
Obtaining a PIN for the location of your farm/ranch does not obligate you to participate in animal identification or tracing. Tribes participating in NAIS may register premises in the database of the State in which they are located, or in a national Tribal database. A third-party agent may be named by the Tribe for the purpose of registering premises and managing the Tribes’ NAIS data. A Tribal Agent Form identifying the database to be used and naming any agents working with the Tribe on NAIS should be filled out and filed with the USDA by Tribes participating in the System.
